January Fishing Report:

The rat reds have been biting well on shrimp-tipped jigs in and near
deeper mangrove edges in Pine Island Sound. Schools of mudding mullet
have been a major locator in finding large schools of reds. Most reds
caught have been in the 16-18 inch range. On very warm days, some upper
slot and oversized reds have been caught in the mix. The only consisted
reports of big redfish have been in the Charlotte Harbor area.

Trout season is open and the fish have stayed consistent on the bite in
Pine Island Sound. Most trout caught have been in the lower slot (15-17
inch). On very cold days, slow jigging shrimp-tipped jigs in deeper
creeks has been the way to success. While on longer stretches of warmer
days, the grass flats have produced well.

The sheepshead bite is at its peak right now. Look for deeper areas with
current that coincide with oyster bottom. Put half of a shrimp on a
super sharp size 1/0 hook (Owner SSW size 1/0) making sure the bait
stays still on the bottom, and you will feel the classic tap. Don't set
the hook too soon. Set the hook when you feel dead weight.

The Snook bite has been slow in the Pine Island Sound area. It's still
not warm enough. Deep canals and far backcountry areas have produced
quality fish.

Tight lines
Capt. Jeff
